#TheLinkedInGuru Tip of the Week

Here is a collection of the current and past LinkedIn Tip of the Week that I have published. Please take a look at them and pass them along to your network. Namaste 🙏 🖖

#TheLinkedInGuru #GuruGoodNews I just lost 13,000 followers and that's okay.

Now that the "Almighty Algorithm" has adjusted my followers, I thought it would be appropriate for me to restate my philosophy out here again. I really do think this is good news because LinkedIn is making an effort to eliminate fake and invalid accounts from our network.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Your Name and ONLY Your Name

I have been taught that the name you use on LinkedIn is one of the five most important pieces of information you can have on your LinkedIn Profile to help you get found.

#TheLinkedInGuru #GuruGoodNews LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Don’t Collect, Connect

I’ve heard the idea of connecting with folks expressed very well by some LinkedIn experts I admire. One friend from Australia says it like this: “Build a network, not a database”. Thank you Darrel Griffin!

#TheLinkedInGuru #GuruGoodNews LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Celebrate this wonderful professional networking platform!

Last Friday on May 5, 2023 (LinkedIn's 20th birthday) I had the honor of doing a special one hour LIVE with three of my favorite people here on LinkedIn - Kevin D. Turner, Debbie Wemyss, and Gillian Whitney.

#TheLinkedInGuru #GuruGoodNews Happy 20th Birthday LinkedIn

Special 1 Hour LinkedIn Live to celebrate LinkedIn’s 20th Anniversary with Debbie Wemyss, Jeff Young, Kevin D. Turner, & Gillian Whitney

#TheLinkedInGuru #GuruGoodNews Things you need to know about Profile verification:

1) It can only be done from the mobile app. 2) It may not have rolled out to you yet 3) There are various types of verification

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Approach LinkedIn and Life From the Same World View

I just had to pass this recent post along from my good FRIEND (Familiar Relationships Inspiring Everything New and Different) Kevin D. Turner. He talks about the fact that LinkedIn and the Real World can be and (by all rights) should be approached the same.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the week: Hidden Features on LinkedIn

Over the years since I joined LinkedIn in May 2004 if there is one thing I have discovered about LinkedIn it is that they LOVE to hide things.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: The Person Who Just Looked at Your Profile May Not Want to Connect With You and That’s Okay...

Don't worry about WHY... Isn’t it enough most of the time that they DID check you out? Just because I look at your profile does not necessarily mean I want to connect with you. Why do I look at your Profile?

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: You are More Than Just You...You are Your Network

I often talk about networking on LinkedIn and the power of your network, particularly your second degree network (the people that your connections can introduce you to).

Favorite New LinkedIn Features (And Why To Try Them).

Join Jeff Young, LinkedIn Trainer, #TheLinkedInGuru, and Annette Richmond, Personal Brand Strategist, Personal Brand You, for a discussion on the best new LinkedIn features. Don’t miss this lively discussion. Start getting smarter today by following Jeff on LinkedIn!

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Use Edit Public Profile to Count Your Keywords

It's been quite a while since I posted a video so I thought I would bring this one back. Especially since I recently mentioned this in a seminar, but didn't have time to show how this is done.

#TheLinkedInGuru #GuruGoodNews Activity Categories is the latest new feature on LinkedIn

I'm announcing this new feature to my network because I think it will be a real game changer. LinkedIn is now categorizing your content on your profile and helping all content creators showcase their different varieties of content.

#TheLinkedInGuru Gazette LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Be Effective on LinkedIn by Stumping the Guru.

#TheLinkedInGuru #GuruGoodNews Do you have STARs in your network?

In acronym-speak STAR = Super Team Always Ready! Most of us have a group of people that we communicate with regularly and highly value here on LinkedIn. Did you know that you can now STAR the messages from those folks? I just got this new feature.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: How many CURRENT positions do you have on your LinkedIn Profile?

For those that know me, they know I have been retired for over 15 years now. Even though I am retired, I have SIX different current positions on my LinkedIn profile.

#TheLinkedInGuru #GuruGoodNews About a week ago I did a virtual LinkedIn seminar.

It was for along-time connection John Austin-Brooks and his team at Abel Imray in the United Kingdom. We called it a "Stump the Guru" session and here is what John had to say about it:

#TheLinkedInGuru Minding Your Manners on LinkedIn

Are you running into the “Commercial Use Limit" on LinkedIn because you have a free account? Here is a way to do a search (on a hashtag, for example) that will help you save your searches on LinkedIn.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Three Things You Should Know About Me...

It's the beginning of a New Year and I am here to help you use LinkedIn effectively so here are three things you should know. Thing Number One: I am a GURU. Now before you give me grief for calling myself that, please listen...

#TheLinkedInGuru Last Tip of 2022: “C”elebrate the New Year by Providing Value

I am a very lucky person. I have gotten to spend the last 15 years being The LinkedIn Guru (Teacher), teaching over 900 free seminars, providing free LinkedIn tips and getting to network with many other teachers around the world.

#TheLinkedInGuru Gazette LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Be Effective on LinkedIn by Remembering This in 2023.

Hello again everyone and welcome to the 28th edition of #TheLinkedInGuru Gazette! I never thought when I started in August 2020 that I would be doing this for over two and a half years!

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: What Does Your Background Photo (Banner) Say About You?

I've heard a lot of my colleagues out here on LinkedIn talking about how important your background photo/banner is recently so I thought I would repost something I did a little over a year ago.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Join a LI Group and use it to learn something.

How many Groups do you belong to on LinkedIn? More importantly how many Groups do you actually participate in on LinkedIn? Groups are a very under utilized resource on LinkedIn. Recently LinkedIn has been trying to offer some love to Groups by popping up up reminders like the one in the picture below.

#TheLinkedInGuru Gazette LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Be Effective on LinkedIn by Publishing a Newsletter.

Hello again everyone and welcome to the 27th edition of #TheLinkedInGuru Gazette! I never thought when I started in August 2020 that I would be doing this for over two years!

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Backup Your LinkedIn Data

It's been a while since I put out this reminder so I thought I would drop it out here again. This week's tip can be summed up in just one word: BACKUP! Do a backup of all your LinkedIn data because, after all, we are all living on "rented" real estate out here on LinkedIn. You don't own your data, LinkedIn does.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Check out the new "About this profile" information.

LinkedIn recently added a new feature that you can access when you go to ANYONE'S profile. If you click on the "More" button in anyone's intro section on their profile LinkedIn now shows you some interesting information:

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Tip AND Treat!!

I couldn't decide which of my favorite costumes to wear to the LinkedIn Halloween party so I finally decided on BOTH because they can both help me make a point about how to be effective on LinkedIn.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: KICK your skills into high gear... Baby's got some skills, and so do YOU!

The skills section of your profile is one of the four most important sections (in addition to your Headline, About Section, and Experience Section) to help you get found.

#TheLinkedInGuru Gazette LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Be Effective on LinkedIn by Getting Up, Showing Up and Staying Up

Hello again everyone and welcome to the 26th edition of #TheLinkedInGuru Gazette! I never thought when I started in August 2020 that I would be doing this for over two years!

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Save Time by Using "My Items" (Saved Items)

The other day a friend of mine asked if anyone had seen a specific post. Thank goodness I had saved it so that all I had to do was go to "My Items", grab the link and send it to them.

#TheLinkedInGuru YOUR PROBLEM IS OBVIOUS!

Here we are at Wednesday and I have seen EVERY one of the "problems" that I describe below already this week on LinkedIn. So I decided it was time to post about it. This is only my opinion. What's yours?

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Let Your Audience Know Who You Are

To link or not to link, that is STILL the question for many folks. So I thought I would do a little test this week to see what kind of reach I can get with LOTS of links in my post.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Protect Your Email Address

Let me tell you a quick story. A story of BOTS and Cyber Security. Recently, I added an Email to the About Section on my LinkedIn profile because I wanted to be more open to being contacted.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Work Around for the New Pin the Comment Feature

Over the past few days many of my friends and colleagues have posted many times about the new "Pin Comment" feature (something I have come to call "Pin the tail on the comment")! 🀠đź

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Try Not to Suffer From "Shiny Object Syndrome" on LinkedIn

Unless you have been living under a rock for the past several years, you have realized by now that LinkedIn is rolling out at least one new feature a week.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: G.I.V.E. to your Network

My advice on the best way to strengthen your network and best take advantage of using a tool like LinkedIn is to G.I.V.E. What that acronym really means is to be GENEROUS, be INTERESTING, be VALUABLE and be EXCEPTIONAL. By doing these things your network will come to know you, like you and trust you.

#TheLinkedInGuru Gazette LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Be Effective on LinkedIn by Attending a LinkedIn LIVE

Hello again everyone and welcome to the 25th edition of #TheLinkedInGuru Gazette! I never thought when I started in August 2020 that I would be doing this for two years!

Groups are great places to collaborate on LinkedIn! That's why I wanted to take a moment to highlight and bring this recent collaboration with a good friend, Craig Langley. to your attention.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: “Attract the Best, Repel the Rest”

To give proper credit for this week’s post, I have to give a shout out to Angus Grady (a great friend from the United Kingdom) who said it first.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Use Hashtags and Follow Topics on LinkedIn

I find that hashtags are a real mystery to some folks. The dictionary definition is: A word or phrase preceded by a hash sign (#), used on social media websites and applications to identify messages on a specific topic. That’s simple enough.

#TheLinkedInGuru Gazette LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Be Effective on LinkedIn by Reading a Good Book

Hello again everyone and welcome to the 24th edition of #TheLinkedInGuru Gazette! I never thought when I started in August 2020 that I would be doing this for two years!

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Use Google Search to Avoid the Commercial Search Limit and Being in Search Jail

Are you running into the “Commercial Use Limit” on LinkedIn because you have a free account? If you do not understand the Search Limit check out the link at the bottom.

#TheLinkedInGuru Tip of the Week: What am I talking about? Your ABOUT Section!

If you don't have an About Section on your profile... CREATE ONE! When you visit someone else's profile, READ the ABOUT Section... ALL of it!

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Take Time to "Reset the Room" on LinkedIn

It's been a long time since I did a video on LinkedIn. It's also been a long time since I took time to tell my new connections and followers what I do on LinkedIn.

#TheLinkedInGuru Gazette LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Be Effective on LinkedIn by NOT Doing These Things

Hello again everyone and welcome to the 23rd edition of #TheLinkedInGuru Gazette! I never thought when I started in August 2020 that I would be doing this for almost two years!

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Take an assessment of your LinkedIn Profile

Please check out this assessment from my great friend SHELLY ELSLIGER, PPCC, EDI Cert. đť“đťˇđť˘đť¬ đť˘đť¬ đťđťˇđťž đť§đťžđť° đťšđť§đťť đť˘đť¦đť©đť«đť¨đťŻđťžđťť 200 đťŞđť®đťžđť¬đťđť˘đť¨đť§ đťŻđťžđť«đť¬đť˘đť¨đť§ đť¨đťź đťđťˇđťž đťšđť¬đť¬đťžđť¬đť¬đť¦đťžđť§đť.

#TheLinkedInGuru Gazette LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Be Effective on LinkedIn by Building a Strong NETWORK

Do me a great favor and when/if you see this in your Email, please click Open on LinkedIn at the top and react or comment. It will give me a much better idea of who is actually reading this! Thank you!

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Real Strength has to do With Helping Others

I have said this many times, but I have never put it into a Tip of the Week. I typically do not connect with someone on LinkedIn that I have not met face-to-face or virtually, however that doesn’t mean that I don’t want to help.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Take the Good and the Bad and Deal With It

Are you like me? Some days I have a love/hate relationship with LinkedIn. I absolutely LOVE this platform! But, there are some days that just get me down... I have two outstanding open cases with LinkedIn.

#TheLinkedInGuru Gazette LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Be Effective on LinkedIn by Using Audio

Hello again everyone and welcome to the next edition of TheLinkedInGuru Gazette! Do me a great favor and when/if you see this in your Email, please click đťŽđť©đťžđť§ đť¨đť§ đť‹đť˘đť§đť¤đťžđťťđťđť§ at the top.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: UPDATED Save Your Time and Sanity on LinkedIn

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Save Your Time and Sanity on LinkedIn

This week's tip has links to đť“đť‡đť„ đť…đť”đť“đť”đť‘đť„, đť“đť‡đť„ đťŹđť€đť’đť“, and đť“đť‡đť„ đťŹđť‘đť„đť’đť„đťŤđť“ on LinkedIn.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: “C”elebrate Your Network and Tell Them You “C”are

According to Google, Valentine's Day is popular in the United States as well as in Britain, Canada, and Australia, and it is also celebrated in other countries, including Argentina, France, Mexico, and South Korea. In the Philippines, it is the most common wedding anniversary.

#TheLinkedInGuru Gazette LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Be Effective on LinkedIn by "The Numbers"

Hello again everyone and welcome to the 20th edition of #TheLinkedInGuru Gazette! I never thought I would be doing this for over a year and a half!

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Please Don't "Mail It In" on LinkedIn

Are you "Mailing It In" on LinkedIn? Definition of "Mail It In": To do something with low commitment or effort. Just "going through the motions"... đź• Let me explain what I think that means on LinkedIn:

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: When You Comment, Actually SAY SOMETHING!

Do you engage with your network and your homepage feed by making comments? NO, I mean do you REALLY comment on your network’s stuff?

#TheLinkedInGuru Gazette LinkedIn Tip of Week: Be Effective on LinkedIn By Building Your Own Brand

I have heard the definition of “brand” said like this: “Your brand is what people say about you when you are not in the room” - Jeff Bezos. This makes a great deal of sense to me because, after all, your brand is your reputation. It is what you stand for. It is your STORY.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: LinkedIn - "Tis a PUZZLEMENT"!

You folks hear me talk about 3 "P"s all the time, but when it comes to this "P" - Puzzlement called LinkedIn I think 3 "L"s are appropriate.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Don't be a "Redshirt" on LinkedIn!

Perhaps this is a bit esoteric, but all my Star Trek peeps will get this one. Let me explain what a "Redshirt" is...

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Backup Your LinkedIn Data

Happy holidays from my Starship to yours in whatever part of the galaxy you live! It's the holiday season and here is my gift to all my connections and followers.

#TheLinkedInGuru Gazette LinkedIn Tip of Week: Be Effective on LinkedIn by Using a Services Page

A ❤️felt thank you to the 24,750 newsletter subscribers for coming along on this journey! Please click "Subscribe" if you would like to see more LinkedIn Tips! #TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Check Out This Assessment from my great friend SHELLY ELSLIGER, PPCC, EDI Cert.

đť“đťˇđť˘đť¬ đť˘đť¬ đťđťˇđťž đť§đťžđť° đťšđť§đťť đť˘đť¦đť©đť«đť¨đťŻđťžđťť 150 đťŞđť®đťžđť¬đťđť˘đť¨đť§ đťŻđťžđť«đť¬đť˘đť¨đť§ đť¨đťź đťđťˇđťž đťšđť¬đť¬đťžđť¬đť¬đť¦đťžđť§đť. How can I even begin to tell you how much I admire this #LinkedInWonderWoman?

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Don't Post and Ghost!

Have you heard about “posting and ghosting?” That's what the "cool kids" say now to explain the situation where you post content on social media and then close out your app and do not engage with your commenters and likers.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Make Time to Check Out Someone Else's Content on LinkedIn

With the most recent "fall back" time change only a few hours ago, I imagine many people are "reeling" like the GIF for this post right now! It affects us all differently. With "time" being on folks mind right now I thought I would ask for just a moment of YOUR time...

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Get Notified for What You Want to See

Thanks to Sonal Bahl for her question and inspiration for this update. First of all, NEVER ignore your "Notifications". Notifications = Network and if you ignore your Notifications you are IGNORING your Network!

#TheLinkedInGuru Gazette LinkedIn Tip of Week: Be Effective on LinkedIn by Being Active on LinkedIn

Being active on LinkedIn should mean a different thing to every single one of us. Less than half of the total 756 million users (about 310 million people) are active on LinkedIn each month. Only about 5% of the total users contribute content on a weekly basis. (Source for these statistics in Newsletter).

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Create a Cover Story to Show Off Your Brand

In the 14 years that I have been teaching LinkedIn, I have come across some great people and their content. And, when it comes to "Cover Story" I can't think of a better person's content to highlight than the Queen of Easy Peasy Video, the Google Goddess herself Gillian Whitney.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Create and Share a Services Page for free

As a part of LinkedIn Marketplace (formerly ProFinder) LinkedIn has been rolling out many changes. Sometime ago LinkedIn added the ability for all of us to create a Services Page showing what we offer attached to our profile (hidden under the "Open to" button). Once you do add it, "Providing services" shows up in your profile introduction section.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Searching Your Public Profile for Keywords

With all that is going on right now, it is even more important than ever to make sure your LinkedIn Profile has the right stuff and represents you well!

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Learn to be Effective on LinkedIn by Learning How the Tool Works.

#TheLinkedInGuru Gazette LinkedIn Tip of Week: Be Effective on LinkedIn by Doing What Works for You...

Please click "Subscribe" if you would like to see more LinkedIn Tips! This is going to be another one of those articles where some people are going to disagree with me... and that's OKAY!

#TheLinkedInGuru I wish my father was still around. I lost him in 1972 when I was a senior in high school.

Since then I was lucky enough to have a Father-in-law that became my second father and I lost him in 2011. I am grateful to have known them both and very proud to have been their padawan.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: What do you "Collect" on LinkedIn?

Have you ever heard the phrase “Everyone collects something, even if it is only dust”? 🀠đź 🂠🤣 Some people may like “collecting dust”, but those who know me, know that I DON’T!

#TheLinkedInGuru Gazette LinkedIn Tip of Week: Be Effective on LinkedIn by Using Settings and Privacy

Please click "Subscribe" if you would like to see more LinkedIn Tips! I see so many examples of folks on LinkedIn that have not taken advantage of tailoring their Settings (did you know that there are 287 DIFFERENT settings you can use?) that I thought it was time to do an article about some of the ones that might be "most" useful.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Uncle “Al” Can be Our Pal

Have you met my Uncle “Al” on LinkedIn yet? His full name is “Al Gorithm” and I bet you have heard of him and he has affected your LinkedIn journey already. I’ve been hearing a bunch of folks talking about “Al” these past few days.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: STOP USING LinkedIn!

First of all, let me say that this post is filled with sarcasm, but with all sarcasm there is (hopefully) some truth to be found. So, with that in mind:

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of Week: Use LINKEDIN for All These Things

I don't know if anyone has ever done a LINKEDIN acronym before, but here is what LINKEDIN means to me! I think LINKEDIN is "Super"!!

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Treat Others With RESPECT

A friend of mine đź’« Stella Da Silva đź’« recently posted about people who are Trolls on LinkedIn and it got me thinking about how to stop that behavior. I decided that (for me at least) it is all about RESPECT on LinkedIn (and anywhere else for that matter).

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Preview of Coming Attractions

Please check out the article and click "Subscribe" if you would like to see more LinkedIn Tips! The promises you make on LinkedIn are like putting gold in the bank.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: I'm Still Standing... Avoid BOTS and Browser Extensions That Access LinkedIn.

A few weeks back, my LinkedIn account was restricted every Sunday for 3 out of 4 Sundays in a row for using "automation" aka BOTS (which I DO NOT USE, BTW)!! As of this morning I am on a 2 Sunday streak without getting restricted again, hence "still standing"!

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: What Does Your Background Photo (Banner) Say About You?

Your Banner is the first thing that people see when they come to your profile. It’s a great place to show your brand and make a good first impression.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Don’t Focus on Your Numbers. Focus on Your Audience.

IMHO there is no ONE answer on how to approach this. All of what follows WORKS great for me. Will it work for you? I have no idea. It is up to each of us to find our sweet spot.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Find and Subscribe to a Newsletter on LinkedIn

I'm going to do something I don't normally do. I'm publishing an article as my Tip of the Week. Articles don't normally get as much traction as a short-form post, but I'm using an article for several reasons this week:

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: “C”elebrate Your Network and Tell Them You “C”are

As I sit here and bask in the warmth of all the "C"aring, "C"ompliments and "C"amaraderie I received on Valentine's Day I reflect on what a great network I have out here.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Engage More on LinkedIn by Showing Your Active Status

Did you know that you can tell your connections or everyone when you are active on LinkedIn? I don’t mean that it will bug them about it with an Email or anything, but if they are paying attention they can tell you are currently online. All they have to do is look at your picture to see your status.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Build a Network by Building an ARK (Act of Random Kindness)

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Networking is Like Air, You Need it to Survive!

LinkedIn is one of the best networking tools I have ever found. You can network locally, around the world or even make “First Contact” (see pic) from even farther away! 🖖 So you should be using LinkedIn to find connections, get to know them, build deeper relationships and help your connections.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Desktop Browser Versus Mobile LinkedIn App

Which do you use? I’m told that around 60% of people now use the mobile app exclusively. I realize that the mobile app is CONVENIENT, but for me personally it’s just not as EFFECTIVE. So I spend most of my time on the desktop. Here are three things you can do on the desktop that you CAN”T do on the mobile:

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: “C”elebrate the New Year by Providing Value

I am a very lucky person. I have gotten to spend the last 13 years being The LinkedIn Guru (Teacher), teaching hundreds of free seminars, providing free LinkedIn tips and getting to network with many other teachers around the world. Along the way, I have hopefully provided some value to my students and my network. At least that was my major goal.

#TheLinkedInGuru Gazette LinkedIn Tip of Week: Things to Remember to be Effective on LinkedIn in 2021

Hello again everyone and welcome to another edition of #TheLinkedInGuru Gazette! A ❤️felt thank you to the 13,450 newsletter subscribers for coming along on this journey! Please check out the rest of the article and click "Subscribe" if you would like to see more! As you think about your plans and approach for the upcoming New Year you should also be planning how you will approach Social Media. For me and over 770 million other members that means how to approach LinkedIn.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Explore the Quick Clicks on a Person’s Profile

Did you know that there are many different “shortcuts” that you can click on the desktop browser when you visit a person’s profile that will show you MORE information? Please check out the video and I will show five different “clicks” that will help you easily find and show more about a person in just a few seconds.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: "C"elebrate the Holidays by Keeping in Touch With Your Network!

As I sit here and bask in the warmth of all the "C"aring, "C"ompliments, "C"hocolate and "C"amaraderie I have received this holiday season, I reflect on what a great network I have out here. From "C"lose to home in "C"olumbus, OH it stretches to both "C"oasts and goes from "C"onnecticut to "C"alifornia. It has expanded to "C"anada and traveled across the Seven "C"s (poetic license on that one đź‰) and now encompasses almost all seven "C"ontinents!

#TheLinkedInGuru Does any one else remember Harry Chapin?

He was a great humanitarian and folk singer. One of his songs was called "Circle". Here is a link to remind you: https://lnkd.in/dEMAdJs I was thinking about how it relates to me and LinkedIn and came up with this refrain: All my life's a network, Many a city and many a town, A Zoom or maybe a face-to-face, Doesn't matter how it goes down.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: It’s Okay to be “Human” on LinkedIn

LinkedIn is a wonderful Social Media platform for professionals. And one of the things that I have found over the years is that they don’t call it “Social” Media for nothing! It’s okay to be social and “human” (like my Vulcan friend, even though he is only half human, in the picture) on LinkedIn and as a part of being human it’s okay to be yourself!

#TheLinkedInGuru Gazette LinkedIn Tip of Week: Use Searches on LinkedIn to be More Effective

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Join the Conversation, Say Thank You!

Actually, I know I am a few days early for Thanksgiving here in the US, but IMHO every day out here is a day for saying thanks. It is especially appropriate for this time of year. One of the greatest things about networking for me is that I get to say THANK YOU so often. If you don't believe me, check out my Activity Feed on LinkedIn and count the number of times I say "thanks". It is a great feeling and it is also one of the easiest ways of joining the conversation on LinkedIn.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: “Your Brand is What People Say About You When You are Not in the Room”

That quote from Jeff Bezos really means a lot. You have to build your own brand out here on LinkedIn. And just to be clear: Your brand is more than a logo… Your brand is more than a picture… Your brand is more than a company name… Your brand is more than a hashtag or web site… Your brand is more than WHAT you do… Your brand is more than HOW you do it… Your brand is even more that WHY you do what you do…

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Be a LinkedIn ROCKSTAR

I don’t mean you have to join a band, but if you want to really get involved, build a network and make a difference on LinkedIn, then be a R-O-C-K-S-T-A-R like this folks: “R”eal desire to help “O”utstading knowledge “C”aring attitude “K”ind and giving “S”uper connections “T”rust your network “A”ctively engage “R”elationship builder

#TheLinkedinGuru LinkedInSmart Podcast

I have only known 🎯 Vietek Ladislaav for a short time, but he is a perfect illustration of how to use the power of LinkedIn. Through LinkedIn he and I were able to find one another and collaborate through his LinkedInSmart podcast across 8 time zones from the USA to Dubai. He said he found me because so many other LinkedIn Gurus (Teachers) recommended that I would be a perfect guest on his show. So, I thought it was only proper that I "pay it forward" by recommending that you also find Vietek, connect or follow him and listen to his LinkedInSmart podcast.

#TheLinkedInGuru Here is the link to a replay of a great conversation I had last night with Anna McAfee.

In case you have been living under a rock for the last few years, Anna is one of the founders of the #LinkedInLocal global movement and has just written a book entitled "How a Hashtag Changed the World". HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! 🙏 🖖 LinkedIn Groups with Jeff Young and Anna McAfee Anna and Jeff will be discussing LinkedIn Groups - what works, what doesn't and how to build your network through the Groups feature. Namaste 🙏 🖖

#TheLinkedInGuru Gazette LinkedIn Tip of Week: Be Effective by Knowing Where Stuff is on LinkedIn

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: “Attract the Best, Repel the Rest”

To give proper credit for this week’s post, I have to give a shout out to Angus Grady (a great friend) who said it first. If you think about the words, you might think that it is a very “closed” philosophy. It isn’t! Rather, it is about FOCUSING your profile and what you do on LinkedIn so you are talking to your target audience.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Which Should You Do - Follow or Connect?

I find that most folks out here don’t even know the difference between follow and connect so here is a link that should explain: https://lnkd.in/e8Xbipd So which is better? Well, that depends. My take on it is if you really want to "build a network, not a database", then you should be very specific about who you connect with and help.

#TheLinkedInGuru How Do You Like your Wednesday? One Hump or Two?

Sweet!! I'll take two humps please... 🀠đź 🂠🤣 Just some random thoughts. Please add yours in the comments. We all have every right to use LinkedIn in whatever way suits us best, but I just wanted to remind folks to be aware of your etiquette and how you come across. Some Do's and Don'ts:

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Searching Your Public Profile for Keywords

Bringing back a favorite tip of mine for an encore "performance". With all the "Social Distancing" that is going on right now, it is even more important than ever to make sure your LinkedIn Profile has the right stuff and represents you well! Did you know that there is an easy way to search your LinkedIn Public Profile for any keyword(s) and finding out how many times it is used on your profile?

#TheLinkedInGuru Gazette LinkedIn Tip of Week: Be Effective by Being Yourself

Hello again everyone and welcome to another edition of #TheLinkedInGuru Gazette! A ❤️felt thank you to the 4900 newsletter subscribers for coming along on this journey! As always, I hope this will help you be more effective on LinkedIn! "Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken". - Oscar Wilde

#TheLinkedInGuru Here is the Intro video that I promised a few days ago.

Those who know me, know I occasionally do a how-to video. This is different. I hope it helps you get to know me and my brand. There are several "stars" (aside from Mr. Spock, Captain Kirk and Superman) 🀠đź that I need to thank for helping make this possible:

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of Week: Highlight Significant Events in Your Experience Section

Have you ever done a keynote speech, TEDx talk or been a guest on a podcast or LinkedIn Live? If you have, here is a tip that will help you highlight those events and by doing so help build your personal/professional brand and social reputation.

#TheLinkedInGuru Preview of Coming Attractions!

Lots of changes happening on LinkedIn right now so I wanted to mention what I will have coming out next week and where you can find my LinkedIn Tips: First of all, I will be on a podcast hosted by Doug Thompson debuting on Mon 9/28. Check that out at this link: https://lnkd.in/deaN74D

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: 𝗛𝗼𝄠𝗔𝗰đťđť—¶đťđť—˛ 𝗶𝀠𝗬𝗼đť‚đť—ż 𝗡𝗲đťđť„𝗼𝗿𝗸❓ 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝀠𝗵𝗼𝄠đťđť—Ľ 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱 đť—Ľđť‚đť.

Did you know that LinkedIn will actually show you a snapshot of how many posts the folks in your network have done over the last week? It’s showing you the people that YOU follow. Try it out by clicking on the link at the bottom of this post. It will show you activity for the people you follow from highest number of posts to lowest number of posts.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: đť——đť—Ľ 𝗬𝗼𝂠𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝄠𝗠𝗮𝗻𝆠𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗩𝗶𝗲𝄠𝗬𝗼đť‚đť—ż 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗲❓

I don't know about you, but the number of views of my profile has been going up steadily over the past month or so. And, I know it's not TOTALLY about the numbers, but the number of people that view your profile is at least a relevant anecdotal measure of whether or not you are making progress in building your brand and getting found! It IS about being found! So I thought I would do my 𝗳𝗶𝗿đť€đť đť—˛đťđť—˛đť—ż 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗹 on LinkedIn and ask my network and others how many views YOU are getting.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Don’t Ignore Your Notifications

Notifications on LinkedIn are one of the best ways to actually ENGAGE with your network and build a brand. IMHO, if you ignore your notifications, you ignore your network. Try doing the following several times a day:

#TheLinkedInGuru Gazette Hello again everyone and welcome to another edition of #TheLinkedInGuru Gazette! As always, I hope this will help you be more effective on LinkedIn!

Today I would like to talk about what I believe are some best practices when you are posting on LinkedIn. Those of you who know me already know I am all about my three "C"s - Coffee, Conversation and occasionally Chocolate!

This week I get to do a free seminar about branding on LinkedIn. It is one of my favorites because it illustrates how far LinkedIn has improved since just being a tool for “your online resume and finding a job”... LinkedIn is a GREAT platform to build a personal and professional brand and MUCH MORE!

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Join a Group Where You Can Learn and Contribute

Please consider joining my Group on LinkedIn at the link below if you are interested in learning great tips on how to use LinkedIn from a host of great folks all over the world.

#TheLinkedInGuru Gazette This is currently just a test and in beta mode. I may not continue publishing a newsletter.

First of all, thank you for checking out my first (and probably last) newsletter. I wanted to test this process out to see what kind of traction it will get. LinkedIn promised to "notify" my network that this had been published. We will see if that actually happens.

You can use them to build your brand (if you use a unique one, anyway).

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: It’s Not About the Numbers, But it is About Providing Value...

If you know me, you know that I don’t really like to post about myself, but it’s been a good year so far on LinkedIn so I thought I would share. Thank you to my network for checking out my “stuff”. I am always gratified when someone likes, comments or shares one of my posts. And, even more gratifying is I get to meet such interesting people out here.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Quick Tip: Use Someone Else's Profile to set up your own #OPENTOWORK

Here's a quick tip I just discovered. If you would like to get #OPENTOWORK set up and started on your profile do this: Go to someone's profile that already has it set up (you can see the green highlighted hashtag on their profile photo). Click on their photo and you will get a screen like the one in the picture below. Thank you to Stephen Quinn đź’ˇ for letting me borrow his smiling photo! 🀠đź

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Don’t Tolerate Fake People on LinkedIn

Over the last few days I have seen more fake accounts on LinkedIn than I have seen during the previous first 6 months combined. It’s pretty obvious that somebody let the “BOTS” out of their electronic box. These accounts have shown up in my messages. They have shown up in my profile views. And, unfortunately they have shown up as comments on my posts. The good news is you can do something about it!

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: To Get Found, You Need to do some “Flag Waving"

It was Independence Day here in the United States over the weekend and that got me thinking about “Flag Waving”. Your (flag) Banner is the first thing that people see when they come to your profile and it’s a great place to show your brand and make a good first impression.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: The Person Who Just Looked at Your Profile May Not Want to Connect With You and That’s Okay...

đť——đť—Ľđť—»'đť đť„𝗼𝗿𝗿𝆠𝗮𝗯𝗼đť‚đť 𝗪𝗛𝗬 đťđť—µđť—˛đť† 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗲𝗱... Isn’t it enough most of the time that they DID check you out? Just because someone looks at your profile does not necessarily mean they want to connect with you. Why do I look at a profile?

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Your Name and ONLY Your Name

I have been taught that the name you use on LinkedIn is one of the five most important pieces of information you can have on your LinkedIn Profile. And, the way LinkedIn defines what should be in your name is… well YOUR NAME. Take a look at the link at the bottom of this post and you will see that the User Agreement says you should use your REAL name. It should not include your slogan or other “fluff”. I have heard from my expert friends that having other “stuff” in your name can actually keep you from getting found!

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Your Feedback is Very Much Appreciated

Do you engage with your network by making comments? NO, I mean do you REALLY comment on your network’s stuff? 𝗕𝗧𝗪, “𝗡𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗽𝗼đť€đťâť—”, “𝗪𝗮𝆠đťđť—Ľ 𝗴𝗼❗” 𝗮𝗻𝗱 “𝗜 đťđť—Ľđťđť—®đť—ąđť—ąđť† 𝗮𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲❗” do NOT by themselves make good feedback. They’re okay, but wouldn’t it be a little better if you said WHAT was nice about the post, WHY you are congratulating someone and WHERE you are coming from when you totally agree?

#TheLinkedInGuru

"Come and listen to my story about a man named Jeff, A poor Linked-In-eer, barely kept his family fed, And then one day he was shootin at some food, And up through the ground come a bubblin' Group." "Help that is... LinkedIn Gold, Valuable Tips!"

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Want to Succeed on LinkedIn? Think of the Three “P”s.

Whether you are a beginner, skilled or expert on LinkedIn, success on LinkedIn boils down to these three things: Profile, People, Participate

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: 𝗧𝗼 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰đť đť—Ľđť—ż 𝗡𝗼đť đťđť—Ľ 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰đť? 𝗧𝗵𝗮đť 𝗶𝀠đťđť—µđť—˛ đť—¤đť‚đť—˛đť€đťđť—¶đť—Ľđť—».

I prefer to to meet someone (in person or virtually) first before we connect on LinkedIn and I am focused on contributing and networking in my local geographic area so I have changed my Connect setting to require my Email. The real benefit of this for me is that it has TOTALLY eliminated the "generic" (non-personalized) invitations.

#TheLinkedInGuru 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗲𝗱𝗜𝗻 𝗧𝗶𝗽 đť—Ľđť—ł đťđť—µđť—˛ 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸: 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮đťđť—˛ đť—® 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰đťđť—¶đť—Ľđť—» 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲❗

Have you ever heard the phrase “Everyone collects something, even if it is only dust”? Some people may like “collecting dust”, but those who know me know that I DON’T! I love to collect information about LinkedIn (what else would The LinkedIn Guru collect?) and then pass it along to my network so they can tame this beast called LinkedIn (cue the whip crack sound effect)!

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: How Often Should I Post? One Size Does NOT Fit All

IMHO there is no ONE answer to this question. All of what follows WORKS great for me. Will it work for you? I have no idea. It is up to each of us to find our "tribe" and find our sweet spot.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Join the #KindClub

#TheLinkedinGuru I feel the need... the need for speed!

Has anyone else taken this "stay at home" challenging time to make some "infrastructure" adjustments? My better half and I decided that since we were using our Internet connection as a "life line" (yes, I know you can also "phone a friend") that now was the perfect time to upgrade our Internet service.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Life is Too Short to be Covered in a Four Letter Word Beginning With “S”

NO, NOT THAT ONE 🀠đź 🂠🤣!! I’m talking about SPAM!! I hear folks out here on LinkedIn say that they are receiving too much SPAM in their content, on invitations and on their Groups all the time. DID YOU KNOW YOU CAN ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT?

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Persistence Pays Off

I want to use my Tip of the Week this week to highlight some fantastic resources: the #LinkedInROCKSTARS. In particular I want to highlight one ROCKSTAR, Brenda Meller â•️ Her persistence in bringing other LinkedIn resources to the limelight is phenomenal. Brenda has been doing this ROCKSTAR list for over a year and a half now and she has done an outstanding job of shining the spotlight on SO many other people. Kudos to you Brenda. You are the very best.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Why You Might Not Know if Someone Reshares One of Your Posts

It is a wonderful compliment when someone pays one of your posts forward, but did you know that LinkedIn doesn’t tell you in notifications when this happens? You have to go to the analytics for the post by clicking on the graph icon and check in the upper left corner (just to the right of number of views) to see if your post has been “reshared”.

#TheLinkedInGuru Video Chat is Where It's At

In these "Social Distancing" times video seems to have take over. It's not new. I've been doing video on LinkedIn for over 6 years now. For example, take a look at the video that was done way back in 2014 featuring a 40 pound heavier LinkedIn Guru (lost the weight in 2017).

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: What Does Your NETWORK Mean to You?

𝗧𝗵𝗼đť€đť—˛ đť—Ľđť—ł đť†đť—Ľđť‚ đť„𝗵𝗼 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝄠𝗺𝗲 đť—Ľđť—ż 𝗵𝗮đťđť—˛ đť€đť—˛đť—˛đť—» 𝗺𝆠“đť€đťđť‚𝗳𝗳” đť—Ľđť‚đť 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 đť€đť—µđť—Ľđť‚đť—ąđť—± 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝄠𝗯𝆠𝗻𝗼𝄠đťđť—µđť—®đť đť—ś đťđť—µđť—¶đť—»đť—¸ 𝗺𝆠𝗡đť—𝗧𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗞 𝗶𝀠𝗺𝆠𝗡𝗲đť đť—Şđť—Ľđť—żđťđť—µâť— Now, more than ever, in these “Social Distancing” times you and I have to rely on our networks to make it through. So with that in mind here is how I think we should all approach our network:

#TheLinkedInGuru Bonus LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Searching Your Public Profile for Keywords

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Give Your Network a Little Kindness

đť—Şđť—¶đťđť—µ 𝗮𝗹𝗹 đťđť—µđť—®đť 𝗶𝀠𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 đťđť—µđť—˛ đť„đť—Ľđť—żđť—ąđť—± đť„đť—˛ đť—°đť—Ľđť‚đť—ąđť—± 𝗮𝗹𝗹 đť‚đť€đť—˛ đť—® đť—ąđť—¶đťđťđť—ąđť—˛ đť—şđť—Ľđť—żđť—˛ 𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗻𝗲đť€đť€ 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵đť 𝗻𝗼đť„. One of the nicest things you can do for someone else in your network is to send them a recommendation or endorse them for their skills.

What happens when #LinkedInLinda and #TheLinkedInGuru get together?

Lots of laughter, sharing of experiences and LinkedIn talk of course! Jeff is one of those people who gives and gives and gives to his community, off-line and online. It's good to talk and get to know people who you engage with regularly on LinkedIn, regardless of where they are in the world. I found a friend today. Loved speaking with you this afternoon across the pond Jeff Young - it was a meeting of minds! Namaste 🙏 #LinkedIn #LinkedInNetworking

#TheLinkedInGuru Pssst..HEY YOU! YES YOU... Don't you hate it when someone comes on with a pitch like that?

You just know they are trying to sell you something... Well, I'm not selling, I'm GIVING... So if you are interested in some free tips on how to best utilize LinkedIn see below:

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: It is not about your “numbers”, but if you ENGAGE you will get good “numbers”.

Just checked my number of connections/followers - Yep, continuing to grow by adding like-minded folks that I can learn from and offer my help. But, more importantly what is really gaining me traction is that I am interacting with my network and they are engaging with me through comments and conversations on LinkedIn.

#TheLinkedInGuru Bonus Tip of the Week - What to do if Your LinkedIn Account is Hacked

Those of us who live in an Internet-enabled world (yeah, that pretty much means ALL of us) need to take certain precautions and be prepared to protect ourselves. So with that in mind, I want to point you to my Group on LinkedIn that is focused on helping you use LinkedIn more effectively and safely.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Desktop Browser Versus Mobile LinkedIn App

Which do you use most, a desktop browser or a mobile app for LinkedIn? I’m told that around 60% of people now use the mobile app exclusively. I realize that the mobile app is CONVENIENT, but for me personally it’s just not as EFFECTIVE. So I spend most of my time on the desktop.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: You are More Than Just You...You are Your Network

I often talk about networking on LinkedIn and the power of your network, particularly your second degree network. If you want to know what my 2nd degree network looks like in my hometown Columbus, OH I often mention that you should look at Ohio Stadium on any game day Saturday.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Networking is Like Air, You Need it to Survive!

And no one ever stops breathing while they are alive do they?!?! LinkedIn is one of the best networking tools I have ever found. So you should be using LinkedIn to find connections, get to know your connections, build deeper relationships and help your connections.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Use Direct Links (Bookmarks, Shortcuts) to Get to LinkedIn Content

Getting things done on LinkedIn in one click instead of several can end up saving you loads of time. Sometimes folks forget that LinkedIn on the desktop is based on a web browser. And because of that, you can define some bookmarks to go directly to some of your (or anyone else’s) content. I have listed a few of these below that I use ALL the time.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: How to be Successful on LinkedIn

First of all, let me say that before I started this post I firmly planted my tongue in my cheek and put on my satiric “hat”. So please treat this as such. To be successful on LinkedIn:

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Does Showing Up and Being Active on LinkedIn Make a Difference?

Overall, I think the answer to that question is… you get OUT of LinkedIn as much as you put INTO LinkedIn, but what kind of difference can “showing up” make? It shouldn’t be all about the “numbers”, but let’s take a look at the graph in the pic and make some observations.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Make Your Profile Picture Visible to the Public

It has been many months since I brought this up, but I STILL see so many people’s profiles where I can only see the “gray ghost” picture so I thought I would post it again.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Make a Promise to Your Network and KEEP Your Promise

Why would it be necessary to make promises about networking? First of all, because I want people to get to know me, like me and trust me when it comes to networking. I want them to know that I am seeking to help not only the people IN my network, but those people who are NOT in my network YET.

LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Find a Local LinkedIn Guru (Teacher) for Help With Utilizing LinkedIn

Sometimes when I have introduced myself as the LinkedIn GURU (Teacher) I have jokingly said that GURU stands for "General Understanding, Relatively Useless". Well, I believe GURU (Teacher) stands for "Gets to Uncover the Real Usefulness" instead!

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: “C”elebrate the New Year by Providing Value

I am a very lucky person. I have gotten to spend the last 12 years being the LinkedIn Guru (Teacher), teaching many free seminars, providing free LinkedIn tips and getting to network with many other teachers around the world. Along the way, I have hopefully provided some value to my students and my network. At least that was my major goal.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Connect With or Follow the #LinkedInWonderWoman

Shelly Elsliger IS the LinkedIn Wonder Woman! I have known Shelly for almost three years now and never met her "in person", but she is living proof that your brand can shine through on LinkedIn.

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Favorite Tip.

I was recently asked by a good friend Petra Fisher to share my favorite tip on LinkedIn. I couldn't really decide on which one was my favorite so I decided to post TWO tips about one topic - Public Profile.

#TheLinkedInGuru TWO tips about one topic - Public Profile

Okay Petra, I couldn't really decide on which one was my favorite so I decided to post TWO tips about one topic - Public Profile. This seems to be a very ignored area and there are a couple of things I thought I would highlight.

Jeff Young on LinkedIn: #TheLinkedInGuru #TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: It’s Okay to be “Human” on LinkedIn

LinkedIn is a wonderful Social Media platform for professionals. And one of the things that I have found over the years is that they don’t call it “Social” Media for nothing!

Jeff Young on LinkedIn: #TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Tis the Season to G.I.V.E. to Your Network

What that G.I.V.E. acronym really means is to be GENEROUS, be INTERESTING, be VALUABLE and be EXCEPTIONAL. By doing these things your network will come to know you, like you and trust you.

Jeff Young on LinkedIn: #TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Tis the Season for Thanks

Actually, I know I am a few days early for Thanksgiving here in the US, but IMHO every day out here is a day for saying thanks. It is especially appropriate for this time of year. One of the greatest things about networking for me is that I get to say THANK YOU so often.

Jeff Young on LinkedIn: #TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Don’t Collect, Connect

I’ve heard the idea of connecting with folks expressed very well by some LinkedIn experts I admire. One friend from Australia says it like this: “Build a network, not a database”. Thank you @Darrel Griffin.

Jeff Young on LinkedIn: #TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Calling All Veterans!

“All gave some, some gave all” I want to thank all the veterans out here on LinkedIn for your service. For some time now, LinkedIn has been offering eligible service members, veterans and military spouses one year of free access to LinkedIn Premium and LinkedIn Learning.

Jeff Young on LinkedIn: #TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: How Do You Learn Best?

Is your best way to learn visually (video)? Do you prefer a live (butts in seats) or virtual (webinar) session? Or do you learn a great deal better via audio (podcast)? As a long-time LinkedIn Guru (Teacher) I KNOW that different folks learn in different ways so I try to provide tips in a mix of many different ways to learn.

Jeff Young on LinkedIn: #TheLinkedInGuru Bonus LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Searching Your Public Profile for Keywords

Did you know that there is an easy way to search your LinkedIn Public Profile for any keyword(s) and finding out how many times it is used on your profile? Keywords on your profile are VERY important and knowing how many times you have used a keyword on your profile is just AS important.

Jeff Young on LinkedIn: #TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: “Those Who Can Do - Do… Those Who CAN DO MORE - Teach”

That’s perhaps a slightly different way than you have heard that quote, but for those of you who know me, you know that I sometimes introduce myself as “Hello, I’m a Teacher… What’s your superpower?” I am always looking for a new venue to teach LinkedIn. And, this week is a big one for me!

Jeff Young on LinkedIn: #TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: “Attract the Best, Repel the Rest”

To give proper credit for this week’s post, I have to give a shout out to ANGUS GRADY (a great friend of mine from the UK) who said this to me first. If you think about the words, you might think that it is a very “closed” philosophy. It isn’t.

Jeff Young on LinkedIn: #TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: “Your Brand is What People Say About You When You are Not in the Room”

That quote from Jeff Bezos really means a lot. You have to build your own brand out here on LinkedIn. And just to be clear: Your brand is more than a logo… Your brand is more than a picture… Your brand is more than a company name… Your brand is more than a hashtag or web site…

Jeff Young on LinkedIn: #TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Don’t Ignore Your Notifications

Notifications on LinkedIn are one of the best ways to actually ENGAGE with your network and build your brand. IMHO, if you ignore your notifications, you ignore your network. Please do the following several times a day:

Jeff Young on LinkedIn: #ThelinkedinGuru A very big shout out and THANK YOU to Malka Bendor and the great folks at Jewish Family Services for hosting a Stump the Guru session this morning

We also got to play 20 Questions thanks to the great content of a wonderful friend of mine Shelly Elsliger, PPCC. The #LinkedInWonderWoman and her excellent questions are included in the document below and I have also included links to Shelly's posts

Jeff Young on LinkedIn: #TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Which Should You Do - Follow or Connect?

I find that most folks out here don’t even know the difference between follow and connect so here is a link that should explain: https://lnkd.in/e8Xbipd So which is better? Well, that depends.

Jeff Young on LinkedIn: #TheLinkedInGuru What a great way to end my week! I think this one easily qualifies for my Good News Friday post.

John you really nailed the introduction on this one. Vicki and I had a ball getting to know one another and I thought she was awesome from the "get go" because one of the first things out of her mouth was a movie quote!! This is how LinkedIn should really be used folks. To find two people and introduce them because you KNOW they will become colleagues and fast friends!

Jeff Young on LinkedIn: #TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Why Should You Create a LinkedIn (Company) Page

If you are a solopreneur, entrepreneur or a jobseeker and you have a “Gray Ghost” company logo showing on your LinkedIn profile, you should consider creating a LinkedIn page. LinkedIn help says: “A LinkedIn Page acts as the voice of your organization on LinkedIn. It helps members learn more about your business or school, brand, products and services, and job opportunities.” The key word is BRAND.

Jeff Young on LinkedIn: #TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: What Does Your Background Photo (Banner) Say About You?

Your Banner is the first thing that people see when they come to your profile and it’s a great place to show your brand and make a good first impression. If you don’t HAVE a banner it says NOTHING about you. I did a quick informal poll by looking at the first 20 people “suggested” for me on the “My Network” tab. Here are the results:

Jeff Young on LinkedIn: #TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: What’s in a Name? A Rose by any Other Name Would...

Jeff Young on LinkedIn: #TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: How Long You Have Been Connected to Someone?

Have you ever wondered how long you have been connected with a person on LinkedIn? I have been connected with several people in my network for over 14 years! Know how I found out how long? There are a couple of ways on the desktop you can find out. Check out the link at the bottom for details, but here is a brief explanation of how you do it:

Jeff Young on LinkedIn: #TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: How Active is Your Network? Here’s how to find out.

Jeff Young on LinkedIn: #TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: It’s All About RESPECT

I recently witnessed some Troll-like behavior on LinkedIn and it got me thinking about the best way to eliminate that kind of negative attitude. I decided that (for me at least) it is all about RESPECT on LinkedIn (and anywhere else for that matter).

Jeff Young on LinkedIn: #TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Ahead Warp Factor Six! Engage on LinkedIn!!

Being active on LinkedIn is good, but being engaged is even better. To prove my point, please take a look at the link to the excellent article by a colleague of mine Bob McIntosh, CPRW and you will quickly see the difference between the two.

Jeff Young on LinkedIn: #TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Maximize LinkedIn’s Branding Channels

This week I get to do a free seminar about branding on LinkedIn. It is one of my favorites because it illustrates how far LinkedIn has improved since just being a tool for “your online resume and finding a job”...

Jeff Young on LinkedIn: #TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Be a LinkedIn ROCKSTAR

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Be a LinkedIn ROCKSTAR I don’t mean you have to join a band, but if you want to really get involved, build a network and make a difference on LinkedIn, then be a R-O-C-K-S-T-A-R like this folks: “R”eal desire to help “O”utstanding knowledge “C”aring attitude “K”ind and giving “S”uper connections “T”rust your network “A”ctively engage “R”elationship builder Thank you again to Brenda Meller (Zawacki) â•️ for the inspiration for this post by creating the ROCKSTAR list. I am very grateful to know many of the folks mentioned and look forward to getting to know all the others on Brenda’s list: https://lnkd.in/ePj3g5u If you are interested in more tips like this, please go to my profile and click the Follow button. #TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Comment on Your Network’s Posts Do you engage with your network and your homepage feed by making comments? NO, I mean do you REALLY comment on your network’s stuff? BTW, “Nice post!”, “Way to go!” and “I totally agree!” do NOT by themselves constitute a comment. They’re okay, but wouldn’t it be a little better if you said WHAT was nice about the post, WHY you are congratulating someone and WHERE you are coming from when you totally agree? I know we are all busy folks and your fingers get really tired after you have typed 10 characters on your keyboard or phone (being “facetious” - only 9 characters - here, boys and girls…) đź‰. The number one thing that you can do to build your brand or build relationships on LinkedIn is join the conversation and engage! Please do your network and yourself the favor of actually giving them feedback. You’ll be surprised… you can teach someone something and you might even learn something yourself! Jeff Young on LinkedIn: #TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Create Valuable Content and Then Point People to Where it can be Found to Help Build Your Brand

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Create Valuable Content and Then Point People to Where it can be Found to Help Build Your Brand Those who have attended my Branding on LinkedIn seminar know that I believe it is all about value-added content out here on LinkedIn. But, how do you get your content seen? No, this isn’t about the “algorithm”...it’s about using tools like FYI.to to generate Smartlists of your content, give them context and then use those links to point people to them! Check out these lists and you will see what I mean: https://lnkd.in/efgGqqY https://lnkd.in/eVdaiRi https://lnkd.in/eJ9N8u8 https://lnkd.in/eSGFGsG And, if you like what you see, please go to my LinkedIn Profile and click the “Follow” button to see more. #TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Check Out the New Notifications By Channel It has always been a best practice on LinkedIn to check your “Settings and Privacy” because LinkedIn LOVES to change things! This week the most recent change is under the “Communications” tab. There is a new section at the top (see pic) called Notifications by channel. Setting notifications on LinkedIn, via Email and Push notifications on your device. Check out these settings and make any updates you wish to make sure you are getting notified of what you would like to see. And, perhaps even MORE importantly you are not being notified for those things you are NOT interested in. Please go to my profile and click the “Follow” button if you want MORE tips. I heard once that "LinkedIn is not written in stone. LinkedIn is written in water". That's really quite profound because it nicely expresses the flexible nature of LinkedIn and how people can use it. And, with my slightly warped sense of humor and appreciation of the "fluid" nature of changes on LinkedIn, I immediately amended the statement to be: "LinkedIn is not written in stone. LinkedIn is written in water...DURING A THUND

#TheLinkedinGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Sometimes You Spell LinkedIn With a Capital “G” - Glitch! Let’s face it folks, this is a software platform and “glitches” come with the territory. Just ask any old IT geek (like myself) if Grace Hopper was right… With software there are always BUGS! So if you are going to use this tool, you will have to get used to it acting a little “WONKY” (that’s a technical term I learned from my friends “down under”) every once in a while! But there is a silver lining to this story… These “glitches” seem to happen before LinkedIn rolls out an enhancement. So if you look at this right, the bigger the “glitch”, the better the enhancement (or at least that’s what I am telling myself)! 🀠đź 🂠🤣 What’s the latest “Gremlin” that you’ve seen on LinkedIn? Please leave a comment about it! Thanks to @Brenda Meller (Zawacki) for the inspiration for this week’s tip and describing it as “Reminds me a bit of how pets run through the house right before there is an earthquake”. I’ll skip the Earthquake, but I will take the Enhancement, thanks! Namaste 🙏 đź––, my friend! #socialmedia #linked

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Collections, Collections and More Collections Have you ever heard the phrase “Everyone collects something, even if it is only dust”? Some people may like “collecting dust”, but those who know me know that I DON’T! Please FOLLOW me if you like what you see here. There is always more on the way! #TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Use Google Search to Avoid the Commercial Search Limit and Being in Search Jail Are you running into the “Commercial Use Limit” on Linkedin because you have a free account? If you do not understand the Search Limit check out the link at the bottom. Here is a way to do a search (on a hashtag, for example) that will help you save the number of searches on LinkedIn. Go to Google and do a search for the following: “site: linkedin.com #TheLinkedInGuru” (without the quotes). This will allow you to get many results and not count against your “use limit” on LinkedIn at all! You can substitute anything you want for #TheLinkedInGuru and it should work just as well. This works on ANY search, not just hashtags. Try it and please let me know what you think in the comments. And, if you like what you see here PLEASE go to my profile and click the “Follow” button. It will put my “stuff” on your homepage feed. Namaste 🙏🖖 https://lnkd.in/eSyr48v #socialmedia #linkedin #networking #branding #training #tips #careerdevelopment

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Your Brand is Your Story, Your Story is Your Brand I have heard the definition of “brand” said like this: “Your brand is what people say about you when you are not in the room”. This makes a great deal of sense to me because, after all, your brand is your reputation. It is what you stand for. It is your STORY. But, at the same, the reverse is also true. Your story is what sets you apart from all others. It is how you BECAME your brand. It is how you found your WHY. It is the journey that brought you to where you can add the most value. It is your BRAND. I don’t have enough room here to tell my whole story. Please take a moment and read the attached document if you would like to get to know me better. And then, please do your best to tell YOUR STORY in your LinkedIn profile, show folks your BRAND and tell me about it in the comments! Finally, a huge shout out and thank you to @Dean Pulliam, my long-time friend who got my LinkedIn STORY/BRAND started with a single sentence (see attached). Namaste 🙏🖖, my friend. #TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Approach LinkedIn (or Anything Else) With a Positive Attitude. I dedicate this post to all my peeps that inspire me with your positive energy! Thank you all! Don’t get me wrong, folks. I don't mind an occasional rant (I have even been known to do one every once in a while myself), but when I do I try to sprinkle in a little humor and poke a little fun as well. As the old song says, you have to “Accentuate the Positive, Eliminate the Negative” (and no, I’m NOT old enough to have heard Bing Crosby sing it live)… 🀠đź 🂠🤣 After all, if ALL you do on LinkedIn is complain, what does that “brand” you as… a Complainer… Don’t you want your brand to invoke a positive reaction? Wouldn’t you rather connect and engage with someone who ADDS value rather than focuses on the negative? As my dear departed mother used to say “You were given one mouth and two ears. Please use them in that ratio”. Listen and respect what others have to say. When you contribute, keep it positive and constructive. As a great connection of mine puts it… “Add value, not NOISE” on LinkedIn. It will serve you well. Namaste

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Stop Using LinkedIn! First of all, let me say that this post is filled with sarcasm, but with all sarcasm there is (hopefully) some truth to be found. So, with that in mind: Stop using LinkedIn if you are a “taker” instead of a “giver” because it is all about YOU. Stop using LinkedIn if you think it is a “silver bullet” and all you have to do is create a profile and people will buy from you or hire you. Stop using LinkedIn if you want to build a database instead of build relationships. Stop using LinkedIn if you think your resume is the ONLY tool you will ever need to get you that next great job. Stop using LinkedIn if you are afraid you can’t learn anything because LinkedIn loves to change stuff and loves to hide stuff. What’s my REAL advice… NEVER STOP USING LinkedIn! LinkedIn is the absolute best place to learn, collaborate and grow a wonderful network if you approach it the right way. Thanks to ALL my #LinkedInFam for making LinkedIn the best professional networking place on the planet. ❤️ you folks! #TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Why You Might Not Know if Someone Reshares One of Your Posts It is a wonderful compliment when someone pays one of your posts forward, but did you know that LinkedIn doesn’t tell you in notifications when this happens? You have to go to the analytics for the post by clicking on the graph icon and check in the upper left corner (just to the right of number of views) to see if your post has been “reshared”. That’s why I try to mention the person who wrote the original when I share their post. That way I get a chance to give them credit and thank them for the great information. And, they get notified! If you would like to know more check out the link to an article I wrote a while back about the differences between likes, comments and shares. Why DO I look? Reasons why: Because you looked at me I return the favor. If I think I might be able to help you or we share a common background I’ll try to connect, but otherwise I am JUST looking. Because you liked my stuff. If you were nice enough to click like I will say thank you by looking at your profile. Because you and I share several connections. I trust my network and if they thought you were worth connecting with, then I will look you up and consider it as well. Because you followed me. This is one of the nicest compliments IMHO and I will show my appreciation by looking at your profile. The bottom line here is that none of the things I listed are necessarily reasons for connecting, but if anything on your profile looks like an avenue to build a deeper more meaningful relationship with you I WILL click the connect button. I hope you too Namaste đź™

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Networking is Like Air, You Need it to Survive! And no one ever stops breathing while they are alive do they?!?! LinkedIn is one of the best networking tools I have ever found. So you should be using LinkedIn to find connections, get to know your connections, build deeper relationships with your connections and help your connections whenever possible. That’s what networking means to me. There is another phrase that describes networking to me. Your network is like a garden...it needs a little care and feeding to flourish. Taking care of your network is one of the best things that you can do to help you learn and grow. I wrote an article called “What is This Networking Thing?” over four years ago, but I think it still applies today to how LinkedIn is used to network. Please check it out at the link below if you have a chance and let me know in a comment here how LinkedIn works for you as a networking tool. #TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: To Mention or Not to Mention, That is the Question Do you @Mention folks on your posts? I do all the time because LinkedIn doesn’t always notify the person you want involved in the conversation. For example, when you share someone’s post the original author doesn’t get notified. That’s why I try to mention the person who wrote the original when I share their post. That way I can give them credit, thank them for the great information and they get notified! It also comes in handy when you want to Involve others in the conversation because they can contribute. However, there is a practice out here that is somewhat frowned upon… “Mention-stuffing”. It’s when someone mentions a bunch of people just to arbitrarily widen the reach of their post and “fool” the algorithm into making it more popular. I don’t do that and most of my network doesn’t either. I believe that the merit and value of your content should stand on its own. If your post is of value it will get likes, comments and shares ON ITS OWN without any arbitrary help. How do you feel about using @Mention? Please let me know what you think the proper

If you don't believe me, check out my Activity Feed on LinkedIn and count the number of times I say "thanks". It is a great feeling and it is also one of the easiest ways of engaging with others and joining the conversation on LinkedIn. I believe your personal and professional brand begins with “Thank You”. #TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Use Direct Links (Bookmarks, Shortcuts) to Get to LinkedIn Content Getting things done on LinkedIn in one click instead of several can end up saving you loads of time. Sometimes folks forget that LinkedIn on the desktop is based on a web browser. And because of that, you can define some bookmarks (aka favorites or shortcuts) to go directly to some of your (or anyone else’s) content. I have listed a few of these below that I use ALL the time. In some cases you have to substitute a different “UserName” to get your or other’s content. All of the links below have been shortened, but once you click on the link you will see what I mean. #TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Uncle “Al” Can be Our Pal Have you met my Uncle “Al” on LinkedIn yet? His full name is “Al Gorithm” and I bet you have heard of him and he has affected your Linkedin journey already. I’ve been hearing a bunch of folks talking about “Al” these past few days. Uncle "Al" can be that CRAZY uncle we all know about sometimes, but I still think Uncle Al can be our "Pal" too! We'll see who gets this reference… You see Uncle “Al” is at work all the time in the background watching what we like, comment on and share. He tries to make sure that we get MORE of the kinds of things we like, comment on and share. It’s as simple as that! #TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: “C”elebrate the New Year by Providing Value I am a very lucky person. I have gotten to spend the last 11 years being the LinkedIn Guru (Teacher), teaching many free seminars, providing free LinkedIn tips and getting to network with many other Teachers like @Shelly Elsliger (see pic) around the world. Along the way, I have hopefully provided some value to my students and my network. At least that was my major goal. With that in mind, I would like “C”elebrate the New Year by providing the set of links below for anyone who might want to learn more about LinkedIn. As always, I would enjoy your feedback about how this was helpful or how it could be improved. HAPPY NEW YEAR! #TheLinkedInGuru I hear folks out here on LinkedIn say that they are receiving too much SPAM in their content, on invitations and on their Groups all the time. DID YOU KNOW YOU CAN ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT? First of all, stop commenting on it. The algorithm gives you MORE of what you comment on so don't FEED the algorithm. Secondly, disconnect or block people who do it. They are obviously DOING IT WRONG so don't associate with them. And finally, REPORT IT. There are always options that allow you to report SPAM no matter where you see it. The links below should be of help if you are not sure how: https://lnkd.in/g8TH2g7 https://lnkd.in/gzjw_f5 https://lnkd.in/ewqCxUC I promise my network I will NOT spam you. I hope you make the same promise to those you have in your network. Namaste 🙏 🖖 #socialmedia #linkedin #networking #branding #training #tips #careerdevelopment

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Tis the Season to G.I.V.E. to Your Network What that acronym really means is to be GENEROUS, be INTERESTING, be VALUABLE and be EXCEPTIONAL. By doing these things your network will come to know you, like you and trust you. I saw an article not long ago that I thought expressed it well. Unfortunately, I can't remember where to give proper credit, but the gist of the article stated this: "LinkedIn is not written in stone. LinkedIn is written in water...DURING A THUNDERSTORM"! Check out this link for much more information: https://lnkd.in/dJpXpZv Namaste 🙏 🖖

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Follow the Yellow Brick Road! Everyone knows that the way you get to Emerald City in the Land of Oz is… well, if everybody knows I guess I don’t need to tell you, but did you know there is a “Yellow Brick Road” on LinkedIn too and you can follow people, companies and topics? It’s really easy. If you come across a person, company or topic that you would like to see their content on your feed, then all you have to do is click “Follow” on their profile page. If you don't see a “Follow” button: Click the “More...” icon on the top portion of the person's profile. Select “Follow” from the drop down. Check out the link below for more information and even a helpful video on how following works. And, if this or my other tips are helpful PLEASE follow me! I am always honored when someone takes the time to check out my tips. THANK YOU to all my existing followers! #TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: It’s Okay to be “Human” on LinkedIn LinkedIn is a wonderful Social Media platform for professionals. And one of the things that I have found over the years is that they don’t call it “Social” Media for nothing! It’s okay to be social and “human” on LinkedIn and as a part of being human it’s okay to be yourself! Just because you are a professional doesn’t mean you can’t be a person as well. Showing who you are and expressing yourself, your sense of humor and your values is okay! A goodhearted friend (she knows who she is) recently bought me a new T-Shirt to help me show who I am. So with that in mind I wanted to share the picture below. I often introduce myself as “Hi, I’m a Teacher, what’s your superpower?” It’s what I do and a part of who I am. How do you express who you are on LinkedIn? Let me know what makes you “human” as you use LinkedIn to build your network and your brand. SHARE!! It’s another thing that makes us human! Namaste 🙏 🖖

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: It’s Not About the Numbers, But it is About Providing Value Thank you to my network for checking out my “stuff”. I am always gratified when someone likes, comments or shares one of my posts. And even more gratifying is that some of my posts that are three weeks old still get more hits. The numbers on LinkedIn will show you some interesting analytics, but I find that the most interesting thing is that they show you if what you post provides value. And, that is what it is all about on LinkedIn - Be a giver...provide value. Take a look at your posts over the last few weeks and you will see what I mean. I know my numbers below are NOT as good as many others, but they are good enough for me: Mon 12/3 - 1247 views, 18 likes, 15 comments Fri 11/30 - 658 views, 12 likes, 9 comments Mon 11/26 - 33,447 views, 96 likes, 43 comments It’s all about engaging and providing value and I get far more back than I ever give. I hope you do too! Namaste 🙏 🖖 #socialmedia #linkedin #analytics #networking #branding #training #tips #careerdevelopment

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Calling All Veterans! “All gave some, some gave all” I want to thank all the veterans out here on LinkedIn for your service. For some time now, LinkedIn has been offering eligible service members, veterans and military spouses one year of free access to LinkedIn Premium and LinkedIn Learning. LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Don’t Spend All Day on LinkedIn, But Spend SOME Time EVERY Day on LinkedIn Sometimes when I do a 2 hour seminar I have had folks come up to me afterwards and say “Jeff, you really need a life! All you ever do is spend time on LinkedIn, right?!?!” That’s not really true, although I AM on LinkedIn SEVERAL times a day, it is not ALL day. If you would like to know what a “day in the life” of hashtag#TheLinkedInGuru looks like, then please take a look at the link to the article below: https://lnkd.in/eWW3AxB This will give you an idea of how engage with your network on LinkedIn, but don’t forget that it is just as important to engage with your network OUTSIDE of LinkedIn (even if that means a virtual video chat)! Happy networking and Namaste 🙏 🖖

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Tis the Season for Thanks Actually, IMHO, every day out here is a day for saying thanks, but it is especially appropriate for this time of year. One of the greatest things about networking for me is that I get to say THANK YOU so often. If you don't believe me, check out my Activity Feed on LinkedIn and count the number of times I say "thanks". It is a great feeling and it is also one of the easiest ways of joining the conversation on LinkedIn. After all, all you have to do is comment on someone's post to add your own experience and say "thanks for sharing" or "thanks for giving me a great idea" or even "thanks for adding value". As a networker who believes that you should seek first to help someone else, I always appreciate getting a thank you and I always try to make sure I pass along a "thanks" as well. Please check out the link below and take a moment to say thanks to your network as well. https://lnkd.in/ekdEwp4 Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Namaste 🙏 🖖

What's New on LinkedIn and Why Should You Care? This time of year most people do a little looking back. It’s true about LinkedIn, too. I get to do many seminars that are related to what has CHANGED on LinkedIn over the past 6 - 12 months at this time of year. Believe me, LinkedIn LOVES to change stuff! So if you get a chance, please come to one of my seminars in the next month and I will try to help you see what has changed and why it might be important for you. In the meantime, take a look at the PDF I have included here. It should show you many of the recent changes (I know I probably missed some) over the last year. Enjoy and please share with your network. BTW, I think Adobe Reader will let you download this file. Give it a try. Namaste 🙏 🖖

#TheLinkedInGuru LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Reconnect With Friends Whenever Possible This morning I had the privilege of having breakfast with two of my closest friends Connie Chwan and Jesse Roberts (see picture). It is always good to see them and share what has been happening in each of our lives. Networking is about connecting… But, it is also always important to connect with folks on LinkedIn that don’t happen to be located in the same “neck of the woods”. Last Saturday I had the pleasure of catching up with a good friend Taranum Khan, Ph.D, CCS, TESL from Toronto, Canada. Every day out here, I engage with folks from all over the world (Ohio, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Illinois, Massachusetts, North Carolina, California, Canada, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, India, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand...well, you get the idea). These are all my friends and I am honored to have them in my network. It’s all about engaging and building long-term relationships. That’s what LinkedIn means to me. Try it! I guarantee you will learn something and you will be better for it. Check out some these folks at the link: https://lnkd.in/eJ9N8u8 Namaste đ
